It’s been a long time coming, but piece by piece our Victorian Conservatory is returning to Wentworth Castle. Â The first metal work returned to site in April with the supporting columns. Â These had all had to be re-cast as the originals had been almost totally destroyed by the passage of time.
Once the supports were in place the roof sections have gradually started to take shape. Â The north roof is almost complete including the beautiful finishing crest, nearest to the Potting Shed. Â The Central roof section is close to completion with the elevated lantern section adding an extra dimension and in the next couple of weeks we’ll see the south roof start to return.
In the last couple of weeks we’ve reached one of the most exciting milestones - the completed sections of roof have started to be re-glazed. Â To see glass back in the building has been one of the most rewarding and exciting moments of the project so far - and what glass! Â It was a real challenge getting the specification just right - a heritage glass that was authentic to the late 19th century, but which also met modern building regulations and could be accommodated in the fine and delicate glazing bars of the iron framework.
I’m sure you’ll agree it’s going tobe a first glass piece of restoration work.
