From the M1 motorway

Please follow the brown tourist and Garden directional signs after you leave the motorway at Junction 37 (Barnsley). Follow signs for Barnsley Town Centre (A628) – taking the first exit on the roundabout if you are coming from the north and the third exit on the roundabout if you are travelling from the south.

Take middle lane (signed A6133) at the traffic lights. Turn right at traffic lights (signposted Doncaster A6133 – brown sign at junction). Continue along the dual carriageway until next set of traffic lights (approx 1 mile) where you turn right. Turn left at next junction after you have crossed over the motorway. Continue through Gilroyd until you reach Stainborough Village. Go straight forward at the crossroads junction, past the Strafford Arms pub and follow the estate road up the hill to the visitor car park. The entrance to the Gardens is through the Long Barn Visitor Centre.

From Manchester/Sheffield/Huddersfield via A616 and A628

From the town of Penistone travel towards Barnsley on the A628. Stay on the A628 through Silkstone and Dodworth until you reach Junction 37 of the M1.

By Rail or Coach

Upon arriving in Barnsley interchange you can either take a taxi (fare approx £5.50) or bus (24 & 24A - Stocksbridge Circular). Contact National Rail Enquiries for details.

By Bus

Services 23 and 24 from Barnsley Interchange to Penistone and Stocksbridge run along Lowe Lane to the site. For bus departure times, telephone Traveline on 01709 515151 or click here to visit the Traveline website.

Please note

Please note that despite its name, Wentworth Castle is not in the village of Wentworth near Rotherham (this is in fact a rival estate from the 18th century, known as Wentworth Woodhouse, and is eight miles away from Wentworth Castle).

The directions above are for visitors to Wentworth Castle Gardens and Stainborough Park. If you wish to visit the Northern College for Adult Residential Education, please visit their website for directions: www.northern.ac.uk.

There is a charge of £3 per day for the use of the visitor car park. However, it is free to use if you pay to access the Gardens. To exit the car park you will need a token. These are available from the reception in the Visitor Centre. If you are a blue badge holder there is a parking area available for your use immediately in front of the Visitor Centre.

Opening Times

The Gardens are open daily, April to September10am-5pm, last admission 4.30pm. From October to March, 10am-4pm, last admission at 3.30pm.
